Why does Cache La Poudre
Minerals offer different formulas?

We offer different supplement formulas to meet the needs of different feeding situations. Nutrients available in pastures vary with the terrain (soil) and season; nutrients available in dry forages (hay) depend on the kind of hay, the soil it was grown on, how well it was put up, and how long it has been stored. Cache La Poudre Mineral and Vitamin supplements will meet the needs of most llamas and alpacas.
We provide basic guidelines for choosing the supplement to meet your needs, but we highly recommend that you have your feeds analyzed for truly accurate information about what your llamas and alpacas are eating.1 Custom mineral and vitamin supplements can be prepared to meet specialized needs; contact us for information.

How to feed Cache La Poudre Minerals

Free Choice Feeding
Cache La Poudre mineral and vitamin supplements are designed to be offered free choice at all times where animals feed and drink. Important: Keep the supplements dry and clean. Consumption will vary during the year, but will average 1/4 oz. to 1 oz. per animal per day, depending on the age and weight of the llama or alpaca. Salt blocks and other mineral supplements must be removed. Salt is the attractant and the limiting factor. Always provide an adequate supply of fresh, clean water.

Force Feeding
Sprinkle on grain supplement at a rate of 1/4 oz. to 1/2 oz. per 100 pounds of animal weight, once a day. Remember: more is not always better. Always provide an adequate supply of fresh, clean water. A free choice supply of this supplement may be provided as well for those animals who have increased need.

The Supplements that Cache La Poudre offers

Supplement #1:
Diet consists of: Late or non-irrigated summer, fall or winter pastures; feeding grass hay.

This supplement has a 2:1 calcium/phosphorus ratio and additional Vitamin E. When feeding most grass hays, a 2:1 calcium/phosphorus ration is optimum. Vitamin E is added since very little is available in late or non-irrigated summer or fall/winter pastures or stored forage.

Supplement #2:
Diet consists of: Late or non-irrigated summer, fall or winter pastures; feeding alfalfa hay, or a grass hay that is low in phosphorus.
This supplement has additional phosphorus and Vitamin E supplements. If alfalfa exceeds 1/3 of the total diet or your grass hay is low in phosphorus, your animals will be getting an excessive amount of calcium. More phosphorus is needed to balance the extra calcium. Vitamin E is added since very little is available in late or non-irrigated summer or fall/winter pastures or stored forage.

Supplement #3:
Diet consists of: Spring or irrigated pastures; feeding alfalfa hay, or a grass hay that is low in phosphorous.
This supplement has additional phosphorus and recommended basic levels of Vitamin E. Spring pastures usually are high in calcium, and if alfalfa exceeds 1/3 of the total diet, or your grass hay is low in phosphorus, the animals will be getting an excessive amount of calcium. More phosphorus is needed to balance the extra calcium. Since some Vitamin E is available naturally in fresh, growing forage, less Vitamin E is added.
